According to the Centre for Disease Control, about 20% of children aged between 5 to 11 years have at least 1 untreated decayed tooth. The good news is with a healthy diet and proper dental care, cavities are preventable.

A healthy diet is important for the oral and physical well-being of your child. Below is a list of foods that can are good for healthy teeth:

Water: Saliva is mainly made up of water. Water helps to keep the mouth clean and helps to get rid of food stuck in between the teeth. It is recommended to replace sugary beverages with plain water.

Leafy vegetables: Vegetables such as leeks and spinach are good sources of calcium. It helps protect the teeth’s enamel.

Dairy products: Dairy products consist of calcium and phosphate, which aids to protect tooth enamel.

Lean protein: Foods such as egg, chicken, and fish contains a good amount of protein and help to strengthen your child’s teeth.

Fruits and vegetables: These foods contain a high level of water which is good for keeping the mouth hydrated. Also, they help to balance sugar and keep your child’s teeth clean.

Foods That Are Bad for Dental Health

While the above list can help to improve your child’s dental health, there are a couple of foods that can harm your child’s teeth. Sugary food items are one of the top contributors to tooth decay and gum diseases in children. 

When sugar is mixed with bacteria in the mouth, it can cause tooth enamel to erode. Carbonated beverages can also be harmful to a child's teeth. Try to limit carbonated drinks for toddlers and children.
